Diaphragmatic Breathing which is how it is referred to in Pilates, not only reduces unwanted muscular tension, but also promotes core conditioning as it stretches and tones the diaphragm. The diaphragm is a muscle located at the top of the core which is directly underneath the ribcage and is primarily responsible for breathing. To breathe, the body uses muscles within the upper shoulders and back, making these muscles tight and contributing to a rounded posture which is called “kyphotic”. The strategy for diaphragmatic breathing includes stretching the diaphragm to promote better breathing capabilities, better posture and a strong abdominal core!
